Kiel Opera House

The Kiel Opera House stands beside the waterfront in Kiel, a Grade II listed building of red brick and sandstone. Completed in 1907 to designs by Heinrich Seeling, it opened with Beethoven’s Fidelio. War damage in the 1940s stripped away its Art Nouveau interiors, leaving only the outer walls. Reconstruction in the early 1950s, led by Heinrich Hansen and Guido Widmann, gave the stage house simpler cubic shapes while keeping the original façades. Werner Kallmorgen shaped the new internal fittings for the 1953 reopening.
The house is home to Theater Kiel and hosts opera, ballet and orchestra performances throughout the year. The Kiel Ballet has been guided by figures such as Mario Schröder, Yaroslav Ivanenko and Heather Jurgensen. Since 2003 Georg Fritzsch has led the musical direction, while Daniel Karasek took over as General Director in 2006. Commercial management rests with Jörn Sturm, supporting a busy programme of productions.
Inside, visitors find a modern auditorium framed by the preserved outer walls. The rebuilt interior focuses on clear lines and functional spaces for music and dance. Outside, the brick façade and sandstone detailing recall the early 20th-century design. The opera house overlooks the waterfront, linking its cultural life to Kiel’s maritime setting.
