Burgring

The Burgring is the remains of an old wall fortification near Goddelsheim in north Hesse. It stands on a broad ridge above the Aar valley, where the land falls steeply to the south-west, south and south-east. To the east in the valley lies the abandoned village of Wedinghausen. Archaeologists Willi Görich and Ulrich Bockshammer examined the site in 1936 and 1938. They cut four trenches through the rampart but found no pottery or other artefacts. By the 12th century the ring had already lost its purpose and was left to decay. Visitors walk along the grassy ramparts that enclose about three hectares. The outer bank runs for 677 metres and the inner ditch is partly lined with mortared masonry. Two gateways once pierced the wall, one in the west and the other the so-called ‘water gate’ in the east.
