Schloss Neu-Dettingen

Schloss Neu-Dettingen stands on the south-west shore of Überlinger See near the Dettingen quarter of Konstanz. Built as a lowland castle in the late 12th century by the Lords of Dettingen, it once served as an outer ward for Burg Alt-Dettingen. After a fire in 1642 the buildings were rebuilt around 1661 and later passed to the Knights of the German Order’s commandery on Mainau Island. The surviving structure is a three-storey square keep measuring roughly twelve by twelve metres, topped with stepped gables. Today it houses a local forestry office and is widely known in the area as the Burghof. The modest scale and plain design reflect its origins as a modest noble residence rather than a grand palace. Visitors find a quiet lakeside setting with the compact stone building set against the water. The stepped gables give the façade a simple but distinctive outline. Inside, the forestry office occupies the ground floor while upper rooms remain private. A narrow path skirts the shoreline, offering views across the lake to the distant hills of the Hegau.
