Home Park

Home Park stands in Milehouse, Plymouth, on land once surrounded by allotments and farmland. The oval-shaped ground began as a cinder track with a single wooden grandstand in 1901. It became the home of Plymouth Argyle Football Club in 1903 after the club turned professional. The stadium suffered heavy damage during the Plymouth Blitz in April 1941. Rebuilding after the war included temporary army huts for changing rooms and railway sleepers for terracing. The ground has hosted notable events beyond league football. In 1977 it saw a UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup match between Saint-Étienne and Manchester United. Elton John, George Michael, Take That and Rod Stewart have performed there in summer concerts. England youth internationals have played at the stadium, and it was part of England’s 2018 FIFA World Cup bid. The record attendance of 43,596 came in 1936 for a Second Division match against Aston Villa. Visitors find four linked stands built in 2001 and refurbished in 2019. The Mayflower Grandstand reopened fully in 2020 after a major refurbishment. The Lyndhurst Stand holds about 7,000 spectators and includes a family corner and the Zoo Corner. The Devonport End is where the most vocal supporters gather. The Barn Park End houses away fans and holds about 3,000. The pitch measures roughly 100 metres by 66 metres, protected in winter by two pitch covers.
