River North Tyne

The River North Tyne rises where the Deadwater Burn meets unnamed burns on Deadwater Moor, just inside the Scottish border. It flows south for about 64 kilometres before joining the River South Tyne near Hexham to form the River Tyne. Along its course it passes the village of Kielder, where the Kielder Burn joins it before it enters Kielder Water. The river cuts through the landscape of Northumberland, crossing the route of Hadrian’s Wall between Chollerford and Wall. Its upper reaches wind through moorland and open hills, while downstream it runs through gentler farmland. The water is clean and fast-flowing, making it a favoured spot for anglers seeking salmon and trout. Walkers can follow the North Tyne’s banks or join the long-distance Hadrian’s Wall Path where it crosses the river. The surrounding countryside is quiet and spacious, with open moorland to the west and rolling fields to the east. At Kielder Water the river widens into a large reservoir surrounded by forest, offering calmer waters and scenic views.
