Schloss Hauzenstein

Schloss Hauzenstein stands in the village of Hauzenstein, part of Wenzenbach in Bavaria. The building is protected as a historic monument and also recorded as an archaeological site. A medieval castle once occupied the spot, first mentioned in 1372. The present Baroque palace was built late in the 17th century from stones of the ruined castle. The Walderdorff family has owned it privately since 1830. The painter Kaspar Kögler lived briefly on the estate in 1855–56 as a young servant. He received drawing lessons in Regensburg while staying there. The main building has a striking bell tower with an onion dome and a three-storey hipped roof. A two-storey wing and a mansard-roofed section date from the 17th or 18th century. The former stable now serves as the castle chapel, a square tower topped with a small onion dome and clock. Behind the palace lies a Baroque garden. Nearby in the woods fragments of the old medieval castle walls can still be seen. The gate posts are guarded by seated stone lions, and an iron fence encloses the grounds. A former steward’s house from 1902 stands on the street opposite the entrance.
