Naturkundliches Museum (Schweinfurt)

The Naturkundliches Museum stands beside the Main in Schweinfurt’s museum quarter, a short walk from the Maxbrücke over the river. The building itself, the Harmonie, was once part of a moat that once surrounded the city gate. In 1833 the Harmonie was built in classical style for a music society, though in 1958 a section was removed to make way for the new bridge. The museum now shares the site with other cultural institutions such as the Museum Georg Schäfer and the city library. On the first floor the Vogelsammlung Schuler displays birds from Réunion and Madagascar alongside European species. The collection began when Ludwig Schuler sent skins to his brothers for taxidermy in the late 19th century and was donated to the city in 1892. The museum’s permanent exhibition shows three hundred birds arranged in lifelike dioramas. Each glass case recreates a habitat—meadow, woodland or wetland—so that visitors see how species adapt to their surroundings. Information panels explain topics such as migration routes, egg formation and the evolution of feathers. The Städtische Sammlungen have cared for the collection since 1988, after it spent years in temporary homes. During the Second World War the skins were stored elsewhere and only returned in 1952. A decade later they were again packed away until the Harmonie offered a permanent home. Inside the Harmonie the exhibition rooms are calm and orderly, with low lighting that protects the delicate specimens. The dioramas are arranged in a single sequence so that visitors move from one environment to the next. Outside, the museum sits among trees along the riverbank, a quiet spot that contrasts with the nearby bridge traffic. The building’s classical façade and the modern glass entrance mark the contrast between old and new that runs through Schweinfurt’s cultural quarter.
