Burg Frankenberg
The ruins of Burg Frankenberg stand in Frankenberg, a village in Speichersdorf parish in Upper Franconia. Built around 1220 by the local ministeriales family, the castle appears in records from 1329 and was twice levelled—first in 1461/62 and again during the Thirty Years’ War. After a partial rebuild in 1665, the site passed to the Lords of Birkensee. What remains today are sections of the old ring wall, still visible as bossed ashlar fragments set into the south and west sides of a farmhouse and the south side of a private home. These remnants mark the southern and western limits of the vanished curtain wall. A visitor walks past the farm buildings and notices the medieval stones built into the modern walls. The quiet lanes and scattered houses of Frankenberg give little hint of the fortress that once commanded the valley, yet the embedded fragments keep its memory alive.
