Stiftes
The Stiftes is a wooded hill that rises to 567.7 metres in the eastern Main-Kinzig district of Hesse. It lies between the villages of Schwarzenfels and Oberzell, within the municipality of Sinntal, and belongs to the Staatsforst Altengronau. The hill is part of the Spessart Nature Park yet falls within the natural region known as the Brückenauer Kuppenrhön. Three hills form a compact group here: the Stiftes, the Stoppelsberg 570.7 metres to the northwest, and the Haag 584.6 metres to the east.
The area is protected as a 440.2-hectare Fauna-Flora-Habitat and nature reserve. The designation recognises the rich variety of plants and animals that live on these slopes and ridges. The mix of beech and oak woods, open meadows and streams supports species such as the European wildcat and the black stork. Walkers and naturalists come to see these rare creatures in their habitat.
Paths wind through the reserve, leading to viewpoints that look across the rolling countryside. The forest tracks are quiet, used mainly by local people and occasional visitors. The air is fresh with the scent of pine and damp earth, and the only sounds are birdsong and the rustle of leaves. On clear days the view stretches as far as the Rhön Mountains.
