Sacred Heart Church, Liverpool

Sacred Heart Church stands in central Liverpool, beside the Royal Liverpool University Hospital at the corner of Low Hill and the A57. Built in 1886, it is a Grade II listed Roman Catholic church designed by Goldie, Child & Goldie. The sanctuary was added in the 1890s by Pugin and Pugin. A church hall was completed in 1894 by Sinnott, Powell & Sinnott. The original entrance from Mount Vernon Street was closed when the hospital took over the road. The church reflects the growth of Liverpool’s Catholic community in the 19th century. Its nave and exterior show the work of George Goldie’s firm, while Pugin and Pugin created the altar area. The parish merged with St Michael’s Church after 2000 to form the parish of St Michael and the Sacred Heart. Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School regularly visits the church with its pupils. Sunday Mass is held on Saturday evening at 6.30 pm to avoid clashes with nearby churches. Inside, visitors find a nave designed by Goldie, Child & Goldie and a sanctuary by Pugin and Pugin. The church hall, added in 1894, sits behind the main building. The church’s setting beside the hospital and its quiet corner position give it a calm presence. The blocked Mount Vernon Street entrance reminds visitors of the road’s change to hospital access. The building remains a place of worship and community focus in the city centre.
