Pfarrkirche hll. Märtyrer Johannes und Paulus, Zissersdorf

The Catholic parish church of Saints John and Paul stands in the village of Zissersdorf, part of Drosendorf-Zissersdorf in Lower Austria. It sits on the eastern edge of the village green, beside the old farmsteads and the main road. The church belongs to Stift Geras and falls under the deanery of Geras in the Diocese of St Pölten. The present building dates from 1783, when the parish was founded after an earlier chapel. In 1862 a west tower was added, and in 1906 the nave was widened like a transept and an organ loft inserted. The church is built in the Josephinischer style, with plain walls, round-arched windows and buttresses at the rounded apse. The 37-metre tower has curved gables, pilaster strips, clock faces and a bulbous copper helmet. Inside, the flat ceiling is framed by a continuous cornice and the organ loft projects forward on cast-iron columns. The transept-like extensions contain a sacristy and a Lady chapel. The high altar in the nave is a neo-baroque aedicule holding a painting of Saints John and Paul, flanked by statues of Augustine and Norbert, with a Madonna above. A side chapel contains a Lourdes altar, and the 1906 organ and a bell cast in 1735 complete the furnishings.
