Llynnau Mymbyr are twin lakes in Dyffryn Mymbyr, a valley running from Capel Curig to the Pen-y-Gwryd hotel in Snowdonia. The A4086 road runs along their northern banks. Originally one lake called Llyn Mymbyr, it is now divided by a delta that has built up midway along the north shore. The lake reaches a maximum depth of 30 feet and stretches about three-quarters of a mile in total. The Nantygwryd river feeds the lakes, rising at Llyn Cwm-y-ffynnon and joining the Afon Llugwy at Capel Curig.
The lakes sit in a depression formed by a ring of sandstone known as the Capel Curig Volcanic Formation. Igneous rocks of Moel Siabod rise behind the lakes, which appear linear but bend at the delta in the panorama. The lakes were used for fly-fishing and sub-aqua courses in the 1960s. Today, Plas y Brenin and other local education authorities use them for canoe training. The Nantygwryd river, also marked as Nant Gwryd on maps, flows into the lakes.
Visitors find a quiet stretch of water framed by hills on either side. The lakes offer clear reflections of the surrounding landscape, especially from the north shore. A 360-degree panorama shows the ring of sandstone and the igneous rocks of Moel Siabod. The delta between the two lakes creates a natural division in the water. The area remains a peaceful spot for observing geology and nature. Canoes and training sessions are common on the water, adding a touch of activity to the scene.
