The Maltings Theatre & Cinema

The Maltings is a theatre and cinema in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland. It sits on a hillside in the town centre, built on the site of a 19th-century maltings destroyed by fire. The building overlooks the 17th-century Berwick Bridge and the River Tweed estuary. The venue is managed by a charitable trust that also runs visual arts galleries elsewhere in town. Funding comes from ticket sales, events and grants from Northumberland County Council and Arts Council England. The Maltings presents over 550 events each year. The Main House Theatre seats 314, while the Henry Travers Studio is a flexible black-box space for smaller performances and screenings. The studio seats between 60 and 120 and hosts recitals, workshops and film events. The venue also includes a theatre bar, café bar and workshop spaces. Visitors find a lively arts hub with two performance spaces, a cinema and a café. The Main House Theatre stages mid-scale productions and live broadcasts. The Henry Travers Studio offers an intimate setting for recitals and rehearsals. The theatre bar and café provide places to relax between events.
