Muncaster Fell

Muncaster Fell is a narrow ridge in the western Lake District, stretching six kilometres between the River Mite to the north and the River Esk to the south. It rises from the coast near Ravenglass to Hooker Crag at 231 metres, then slopes gently down to Silver Knott before ending at Eskdale Green. The fell separates the valleys of Miterdale and Eskdale, with steep crags on the north-western side and gentler slopes on the south-eastern side. The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway runs along the lower rocky face on the north-western side. Woodland covers the southern tip, including natural deciduous trees and invasive rhododendron, while Muncaster Castle stands at the south-western point with bamboo planted in its grounds. The fell is worth visiting for its varied landscape and historical features. Alfred Wainwright praised its ridge in his walking guide, calling it a supreme joy. The fell is classed as a Fellranger and recognised as a Marilyn and HuMP by the Database of British and Irish Hills. From the top, views stretch to central Cumbria’s mountains and the coastal plain, with the Isle of Man visible on clear days. The fell also holds a small tarn called Muncaster Tarn, surrounded by woodland below Hooker Crag. A Roman road once ran along the southern ridge, connecting Glannaventa near Ravenglass to Hardknott Fort. Visitors find a mix of natural and man-made features along the fell. A straight track runs along the southern ridge, climbing past the tarn toward Hooker Crag, part of the old Roman route. A low dolmen, inscribed Ross’s Camp 1883, sits on the ridge and was built as a luncheon table. The fell top is covered in moss, gorse, sedge, and bilberry bushes, with bracken spreading in recent years. Peat bogs, including Hooker Moss, dot the ridge between the crags. The modern landscape also includes the distant white turbines of the Walney Wind Farms in the Irish Sea.
