Großer Galtenberg

The Großer Galtenberg stands at the southern end of the Alpbach valley in Tyrol, rising as the highest mountain in the valley. It belongs to the Kitzbühel Alps and reaches 2,424 metres above sea level. The mountain can be reached from the Alpbach suburb of Inneralpbach, where paths begin their climb. Across the valley lies the Alpbachtal ski region, offering a contrasting view of slopes and lifts. From the summit visitors look south over the Wildschönau and down into the Alpbach valley. The Galtenberg’s height and position make it a landmark for walkers and skiers alike. Its slopes form part of the wider Kitzbühel Alps range, recognised for their rugged beauty. The mountain’s southern aspect catches the afternoon sun, lighting the valley below. The contrast between the forested lower slopes and the bare summit ridge adds to its appeal. On clear days the view extends to the Wildschönau, a neighbouring valley of similar charm. A visitor who reaches the top finds a wide panorama of the surrounding Alps. The Alpbach valley stretches northwards, lined with scattered farmsteads and dense woodland. To the east the Kitzbühel Alps continue in a series of sharp ridges. Southwards the Wildschönau valley appears, its meadows and villages visible in the distance. The bare summit offers little shelter, so most walkers linger only long enough to take in the scene before descending.
