Base Brown is a fell in England’s Lake District, standing near the head of Borrowdale Valley. It forms one side of Seathwaite Valley and borders the hanging valley of Gillercomb on its western side. The fell sits within the Western Fells, a triangular area of high ground bordered by the River Cocker and Wasdale. Great Gable and its smaller companion Green Gable lie close by, with Base Brown forming the summit of Green Gable’s north-east ridge. All waters from Base Brown flow into Borrowdale, eventually reaching Derwentwater and the sea.

The fell’s slopes are steep and rough, dropping from Green Gable’s summit through Mitchell Cove to Blackmoor Pols. Beyond this col, the ground rises again to Base Brown’s dome-like summit. On its south-eastern face, crags overlook Styhead Gill, while the north-western flanks descend into Gillercomb. Sour Milk Gill gathers here, cascading over falls before joining Styhead Gill and Grains Gill to form the River Derwent. The summit narrows into a prow-like ridge, with a striking hanging stone poised over the crags.

The summit itself is grassy with a few boulders, marked by a cairn. Views are limited by higher fells, but Skiddaw and Helvellyn can be seen to the north-east. The northern face of the Scafells is visible in the opposite direction, along with Derwentwater and part of Styhead Tarn. Base Brown is often climbed from Seathwaite, with routes leading up Sour Milk Gill or via Blackmoor Pols. The fell also serves as a starting point for ascents of Green and Great Gable.
