Fosbury Camp

Fosbury Camp is an Iron Age bivallate hillfort in Wiltshire. It stands on Knolls Down, a steep-sided spur of Haydown Hill, and covers about ten hectares. The oval earthworks are defended by double ramparts on the south, south-west and east sides. Oakhill Wood borders the camp to the north, while the western edge rises toward the summit of Haydown Hill. A small pond lies inside the eastern defences, possibly dating from Neolithic times. The fort is listed as a scheduled national monument and commands wide views over the surrounding countryside. It sits just below the hilltop at 254 metres above sea level, four metres lower than the true summit. Public footpaths lead from the north, giving easy access through Oakhill Wood. The site lies south of the village of Fosbury, close to Marlborough and Hungerford. Its position on the chalk downland makes it a prominent landmark in the area. Visitors find broad grassy ramparts enclosing a level interior. The double banks and ditches are still clearly visible after centuries of weathering. The small pond in the east adds a quiet spot for reflection. The surrounding woodland and open downland offer walking routes with distant views. The contrast between the defended camp and the peaceful countryside creates a memorable landscape.
