Unteres Schloss

The Unteres Schloss stands in the market town of Regenstauf in the Upper Palatinate region of Bavaria. It occupies a prominent position on Hauptstraße, surrounded by the modern streets of the town. The building began as a noble residence in the 15th century and later served as an administrative centre for the dukes of Palatinate-Neuburg. Its history is tied to figures like Marquart Stör, a castle guardian who held the seat for life in the 1400s. The Stör family had lived in Regenstauf since 1395. After a fire in 1781 destroyed the old Pflegerhaus, the present structure was rebuilt in 1785. It functioned as a judicial seat, first as the Pflegamt, then as a land court from 1812 and an Amtsgericht from 1863. Today the building houses Regenstauf’s cultural centre. Visitors find a multi-purpose hall used for events, exhibitions and community activities. The surrounding area includes the former pond that once protected the Weiherhaus, now reduced to a small water feature. The building itself shows the plain style of late 18th-century reconstruction while retaining traces of its medieval origins.
