Abbey of the Holy Cross
The Abbey of the Holy Cross stands on the edge of Rostock’s old town, a quiet cluster of red-brick buildings dating from the 13th century. Founded in 1270 by Queen Margaret Sambiria of Denmark, it is the only complete abbey left in the city. The Cistercian nuns who lived here came mostly from wealthy Rostock families and grew so numerous in the 14th century that they had to limit new entrants. By 1360 the abbey church was finished, its nave still standing today as the University Church. After the Reformation the site became a Lutheran convent for noblewomen, yet its daily life changed little. By the 19th century the state began taking over church property, and in 1920 the abbey was dissolved, though the last abbess stayed until 1981. The abbey’s history is marked by royal gifts and legal battles. Queen Margaret gave large estates across Mecklenburg, and the nuns managed farms and workshops that made the convent rich. In the 16th century the Rostock Inheritance Agreement turned the nunnery into a Lutheran ladies’ foundation, yet the nuns kept their enclosed way of life. After the Thirty Years’ War only nine sisters remained. In the 19th century the state tried to take the estate, and in 1920 it succeeded without compensation. The church was restored between 1997 and 2002, and the convent buildings now hold the city’s Museum of Cultural History. Visitors walk past the abbey church, its simple Gothic lines softened by later plaster. Inside, the University Church still holds services and concerts beneath its vaulted ceiling. The adjoining museum occupies the former dormitory, refectory and chapter house, where displays trace Rostock’s past from medieval convent life to modern exhibits. Cloisters and a small courtyard offer a sheltered place to pause. The site sits between the university quarter and the old market square, linking centuries of history in one quiet corner of the city.
