Kloster Baumerlenbach

Kloster Baumerlenbach lies in Baumerlenbach, a district of Öhringen in the Hohenlohekreis of Baden-Württemberg. The first written record of the place appears in a 788 deed now kept in the Lorsch Codex. The deed shows that Abbess Hiltisnot gave her monastery, dedicated to the Saviour, Mary and all saints, together with its lands, to Lorsch Abbey in return for an annual payment of twelve ells of coarse linen.

The monastery’s origins remain unclear. Abbess Aba of Rotaha had already transferred her own monastery to Lorsch in 786, and Hiltisnot followed two years later. Both acts brought protection under royal law and ensured regular church services. The deed of 788 was witnessed by Hiltisnot’s brother Count Maorlach and another brother named Anto, both members of a local comital family.

Local legend places the monastery about 600 metres north-east of the present church on the slope above the Kocher. No visible ruins survive, but the church itself passed to the family of Bishop Gebhard of Regensburg and later to Öhringen Stift. The site offers quiet walks along the riverbank and views of the surrounding vineyards and wooded hills.
