Great Malvern Priory

Great Malvern Priory stands in the West Midlands town of Malvern, Worcestershire. Once a Benedictine monastery founded around 1075, it became an Anglican parish church after the Dissolution. The building dominates the Great Malvern Conservation Area and holds Grade I listed status. Inside, visitors find the largest display of 15th-century stained glass in England. Carved misericords from the 15th and 16th centuries and medieval floor and wall tiles add to its historic richness. Sir George Gilbert Scott led a major restoration in 1860, shaping much of what is seen today. The priory’s past reaches back to legends of St Werstan, a monk said to have fled Danish raids and established a hermitage on the site. By the time of Edward the Confessor, Bishop Wulfstan encouraged Aldwyn of Malvern to become the first prior in 1085. Walcher of Malvern, a philosopher and astronomer from Lorraine, succeeded him and is buried beneath a carved tomb lid in St Anne’s Chapel. The priory grew under Westminster Abbey’s oversight and survived the Dissolution when local people bought it to replace their decaying parish church. A visitor today walks through a church that blends Norman foundations with Perpendicular Gothic extensions built between 1440 and 1502. The great square tower resembles that of Gloucester Cathedral, while the chancel contains the monument of John Knotsford, whose patronage helped preserve the medieval glass. The north transept window, a gift from Henry VII in 1501, depicts the Coronation of St Mary. The Nicholson organ, rebuilt over the years, fills the space with music, and the choir remains active. St Anne’s Chapel houses Walcher’s tomb, and the sacristy displays heraldic floor stones for the Lygon family.
