Saint Leopold III Church

St. Leopold is a Roman Catholic parish church in Graz’s 17th district, Puntigam. The church stands among the modern buildings of this southern suburb, where housing grew quickly after the Second World War. Architects Edda Gellner, Fritz Neuhold and Heimo Widtmann won the 1967 competition for a simple parish centre with a church. They arranged the buildings as plain cubes, later adding a freestanding cross-shaped bell tower. The church’s most striking feature is its tent-like roof of black Eternit tiles, set above white walls and a narrow band of windows that makes the roof appear to float. Inside, local artist Fritz Hartlauer designed the fittings and furnishings. The organ was built in 1978 by Leo Werbanschitz with mechanical action, two manuals, a pedalboard and fifteen stops. Three bronze bells hang in the tower, cast by Grassmayr of Innsbruck. The church’s plain exterior and calm interior give the building a quiet dignity suited to its suburban setting. The design avoids ornament, letting light and space shape the atmosphere. The bell tower stands apart from the main structure, marking the entrance without dominating the scene. Visitors find a low, white-plastered church topped by a dark, folded roof that catches the light at different times of day. Inside, the walls are unadorned, allowing the organ case and Hartlauer’s details to stand out. The narrow window band runs round the whole building, giving a continuous ribbon of daylight. The freestanding bell tower frames the entrance and marks the church from a distance. The surrounding district is a mix of apartment blocks and green spaces, where the church serves as a quiet centre for local life.
