Pfarrkirche hl. Jakob der Ältere, Leitzersdorf

The Roman Catholic parish church of Leitzersdorf stands on a slight rise at the southern end of the village green in the Lower Austrian municipality of Leitzersdorf. It is dedicated to Saint James the Elder and belongs to the deanery of Stockerau in the Archdiocese of Vienna. The church has been listed as a protected monument since the late 20th century. The building began as a Romanesque and Gothic structure, later enlarged in the Baroque period with side aisles and a western extension. The south chapel, added in the early 14th century, still shows Gothic ribbed vaulting and medieval wall paintings of Saint Barbara and the Doubting Thomas. The tower, completed in 1709, rises above the chapel and is crowned by an 18th-century octagonal spire. Inside, the nave’s eastern section preserves a 17th-century barrel vault with late 18th-century stucco decoration, while the western extension of 1721 houses a flat organ loft added around 1900. The high altar, dating from about 1826, features a painted altarpiece by Jakob Cimbal depicting the glory of Saint James. A side altar in the southern chapel, installed in 1756, displays an image of the Holy Family by Leopold Kastner. The pulpit, carved in 1822 by Jakob Tutzschek, carries a medallion of Christ’s bust, and the organ was built in 1887 by Johann M. Kauffmann. The church’s interior mixes medieval vaults with Baroque stucco and 19th-century furnishings, creating a quiet space for reflection.
