Murrbäder Backnang Wonnemar

The Murrbäder Backnang Wonnemar is a public leisure pool in Backnang, combining an indoor pool, outdoor pool and sauna landscape. It sits beside the river Murr in the city’s eastern edge. The site replaced an older indoor pool that had operated since 1965. The complex was designed by architect Peter de Wit and cost about 18.5 million euros, making it the most expensive single project in Backnang’s history. After years of debate over its name, the council finally voted in 2012 to include ‘Wonnemar’ in the title. Built in under nineteen months, it opened in December 2012 and now employs forty-five staff. The facility also serves local clubs, hosting swimming training, water-polo matches and triathlon sessions. Visitors find 6 300 square metres of space holding a 25-metre pool with six lanes, a learner pool and a wave channel. There is a children’s splash zone with slides, a 70-metre tube slide called Black Hole, and an outdoor mineral pool. The sauna area offers a bio-sauna, Finnish steam room, cold plunge and outdoor sauna garden. A café and massage rooms sit alongside rest areas, while the outdoor pool includes a 50-metre lap pool, diving tower and beach volleyball courts.
