Ohlsdorf

Ohlsdorf is a quarter in Hamburg-Nord, a district of Hamburg, Germany. It lies near the Alster river, which forms part of its western and northern borders. The area includes residential neighbourhoods like Klein Borstel and parts of Fuhlsbüttel. Ohlsdorf station serves as a key public transport hub for the city. The quarter also contains the Fuhlsbüttel prison, known locally as Santa Fu. The quarter’s most notable feature is the Ohlsdorf Cemetery, the largest in Hamburg and the biggest rural cemetery in the world. Covering over 390 hectares, it stretches across the northern part of the city. The cemetery is not just a burial ground but a landscaped park with lakes, wooded areas and open meadows. It was designed in the late 19th century to combine beauty with practicality. Visitors find wide gravel paths winding through the cemetery, lined with trees and ornate graves. The central chapel and crematorium stand near the main entrance. Smaller chapels and memorials are scattered across the grounds. The landscape includes ponds and bridges, creating a peaceful setting for walks. The cemetery’s scale and design make it a place for reflection as well as history.
