Kirchhofanlage hl. Antonius von Padua, Radmer

The parish church of Radmer stands on a small hill in the village of Radmer in the Leoben district of Styria. Built as a double-tower church between 1600 and 1603, it was funded by Archduke Ferdinand II and designed by Giovanni Pietro de Pomis with Hans Reßl as master builder. The church was expanded between 1692 and 1701 and underwent major renovation in 1901–02. A fire in 1951 destroyed the north tower, roof and part of the north wall, but it was rebuilt and restored by 1953. The church’s architecture features twin towers with bulbous helmets added in 1692 and 1757, and a plain west front with two niches holding wooden statues from around 1700. Inside, a four-bay nave leads to a two-bay choir with rounded apse, all covered by ribbed barrel vaults resting on pilasters with Composite capitals. Rich stucco decoration from the 1720s–30s adorns the vaults, windows and balcony, including wall paintings depicting scenes from the life of St Anthony. The central ceiling painting shows the Christ Child moving from the Virgin’s lap to Anthony’s arms. The high altar of 1727 dominates the choir, framed by gilded statues of Peter and Paul and topped by a painting of the Virgin. A small free-standing altar stands before it, as required since 1965. The left side altar holds a statue of the Archangel Michael above an image of the Immaculate Conception, while the right shows saints Barbara, Catherine and Margaret with a guardian angel above. The ornate pulpit of 1714, attributed to Joseph Claudius Zeller, displays figures of the four Evangelists and a crowned Christ on its sounding board, with the Holy Spirit dove hovering above. The octagonal red-marble font dates from the church’s original construction, and the organ case is a fine example of 18th-century craftsmanship.
