Barn Theatre, Welwyn Garden City

The Barn Theatre stands in Welwyn Garden City, a converted 17th-century timber-framed barn that became a theatre in 1931. The original timbers date to 1597, while the current structure was built around 1830 on Handside Lane. It was once part of Lower Handside Farm before being turned into a theatre. The building received Grade II listed status in 1980 and was purchased by the Barn Theatre Trust in 1984. The Barn Theatre Club, formed in 1969, still runs the venue today. The theatre is worth visiting for its historic charm and active community role. It hosts monthly productions in a 121-seat auditorium refurbished in 2016 and smaller shows in a flexible studio updated in 2014. The Barn Theatre Club also runs youth drama training and participates in festivals. The venue has even served as a film location for *Hot Fuzz*.
