Tolworth Court Farm Fields

Tolworth Court Farm Fields is a Local Nature Reserve in Tolworth, part of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. It covers 43.3 hectares and became a reserve in 2004 for its historical and ecological value. Farming began here in the 11th century, linked to the Domesday Book, and the land likely belonged to a high-status manor in the Middle Ages. The hedgerows and field layout pre-date the late 18th century enclosure acts, with ancient trees and ditches still visible. The fields have remained largely unchanged for 150 years and are managed as neutral hay meadows, with the northern field often waterlogged. The site supports a rich variety of wildlife. Small mammals such as woodmice, field voles and roe deer live here. Birdlife includes little egrets, herons, kestrels, sparrowhawks and buzzards, with red kites seen regularly. Evening visits reveal tawny owls calling and bats hunting overhead. The reserve also hosts a large number of butterflies and moths. The damp northern field provides habitat for plants like creeping bent and marsh foxtail, typical of waterlogged ground. Access is available from Kingston Road, Jubilee Way and Cox Lane, as well as from fields to the south-west. The site offers quiet walking through open meadows and hedgerows that have stood for centuries. Visitors can observe the interplay of history and nature in a landscape little altered since the 19th century. The reserve provides a rare glimpse of traditional farming land within London, where wildlife thrives alongside traces of the past.
