St Mary at Stoke

St Mary at Stoke stands in a prominent position at the foot of a ridge near Stoke Bridge in Ipswich, East Anglia. The church is a Grade I listed building that combines a small medieval nave with a large Victorian extension designed by William Butterfield in 1872. Its parish once formed a small farming community before the arrival of the railway brought rapid population growth. The original 10th-century church, possibly recorded in the Domesday Book, was likely built of wood. The site has strong medieval ties to Ely, with King Edgar granting lands here in 970. The churchyard holds graves from the Second Dutch War, including sailors from ships like the Royal James and St Andrew. The church’s architecture reveals layers of history and change. The medieval nave, now the north aisle, retains a hammer-beam roof with Victorian angel figures replacing earlier ones destroyed during iconoclasm. Butterfield’s 1872 extension doubled the church’s size, using traditional East Anglian flint and Perpendicular style. The choir stalls are made of Riga wainscot oak with richly carved poppy heads. A medieval piscina survives in the south-east corner, and the east window glass was donated by Mrs Lacon in memory of her husband. The church was visited by William Dowsing in 1643 during the Puritan campaign against religious imagery. Visitors find a quiet sanctuary with a blend of medieval and Victorian craftsmanship. The hammer-beam roof and carved angels draw the eye upward, while the Riga oak choir stalls show fine woodwork. The east window’s stained glass commemorates Captain La Con of the Goldrood. The medieval piscina remains in place, a small but clear sign of the church’s age. The site’s setting, near the ridge and bridge, offers a calm contrast to Ipswich’s busy centre.
