Ashgill Force

Ashgill Force is a waterfall in North West England, near the town of Alston in Cumbria. The waterfall sits on Ashgill Beck, a stream that can be reached from the B6277 road or from Garrigill village downstream. Below the main fall, the beck continues with several small cascades, creating a lively scene. Wildlife thrives here, including dippers, small birds often found in British streams. Nearby stand ruins of old industrial buildings, possibly linked to the area’s former lead mining industry. Though less visited than nearby High Force, Hardraw Force and Cauldron Snout, Ashgill Force remains an impressive sight. It drops 55 feet over a rocky ledge, offering a powerful view. The waterfall is quieter than its neighbours, giving visitors a more peaceful experience. Its flow rivals that of Hardraw Force, and the ledge behind the fall is easier to reach. Unlike Hardraw Force, where access behind the fall is now banned, Ashgill Force allows closer inspection of the rock shelf. Visitors find a natural setting with the main fall plunging into a deep pool below. The path along the beck leads past smaller cascades and through quiet surroundings. Wildlife can be spotted along the stream, adding to the appeal. The ruins nearby hint at the area’s industrial past. The overall scene is calm and unspoilt, making it a good place for a short walk or a moment of reflection.
