Helfenstein

The Hohe Dörnberg rises 578.7 metres above sea level as the highest point of the Dörnberg and Schreckenberge ridge within the Habichtswald uplands. It lies inside the Habichtswald Nature Park, split between the municipality of Habichtswald and the town of Zierenberg in northern Hesse. The summit sits eleven kilometres west-north-west of Kassel city centre and is surrounded by smaller basalt domes such as the Helfenstein, Hohlestein and Katzenstein. The mountain’s hard basanite cap has resisted erosion, preserving its flat summit plateau and steep flanks. A ringwall nearly 1.1 kilometres long circles the top, offering wide views north and west. Below, the Helfenstein’s dramatic, treeless basalt cliffs rise to 509.8 metres just one kilometre north of the main peak. The Hohlestein, 476.6 metres high, was once a place of ritual and sacrifice, while the Hangarstein holds a small lake on its wooded slopes. Visitors follow forest paths that cross the ridge, passing the basalt tors of the Helfenstein and the layered tuff exposures on the northern slope. The mountain straddles the watershed between the Fulda and Diemel rivers, with streams like the Nebelbeeke and Dorfbach draining opposite sides. From the summit plateau the landscape stretches across the Habichtswald’s rolling hills, linking Kassel’s urban edge with the wilder uplands beyond.
