Pfarrkirche Matzendorf

The parish church of St Radegundis stands in the centre of Matzendorf, a village in the district of Wiener Neustadt in Lower Austria. Built in 1786 as a Josephinian hall church, it was consecrated the following year and placed under the authority of Melk Abbey. The church is protected as a listed monument and belongs to the deanery of Piesting within the vicariate of Unter dem Wienerwald. The rectangular nave has no separate choir and is divided by pilasters. On the north side a three-bay façade rises to a square tower with louvred openings, clock faces and a low pyramidal roof. Above the main door is the Melk Abbey coat of arms and a large oval window. Inside, three cross-ribbed vaults span the space, and a west gallery is set into the north wall. The south side has a single-storey sacristy under a lean-to roof. The high altar dates from the late 18th century and carries a painting of St Radegundis by Johann Höfel from 1837. Behind it, concealed from view, is an earlier mural of the same saint painted by Matthäus Mutz the Elder in 1786. The pulpit and two baroque statues of St Sebastian and St Roch also belong to this period, along with a Madonna after Carlo Dolci. The seven-stop organ was built around 1790, and the fourteen Stations of the Cross date from 1884.
