Schloss Guteneck
Schloss Guteneck stands on a hill in the small Upper Palatinate village of Guteneck, a protected monument in the Schwandorf district. The site includes medieval and early modern archaeological remains beneath its walls. A castle occupied the spot from the 12th century, first mentioned in 1147. The Muracher family ruled here for three centuries until Wolff Albrecht sold Guteneck in 1593 to Hans Adam von Kreuth. After war damage in the 17th century and ownership changes among Lutheran counts, the estate passed in 1894 to Graf Franz von Spreti. His successor rebuilt the burnt-out complex in 1894, adding a residential wing on medieval foundations. Today the three- to four-sided complex mixes Gothic, baroque and 19th-century elements. The chapel of St Katharina, rebuilt after the 1822 fire, has a domed roof turret. Guests stay in converted holiday flats, attend a medieval-style dinner or a Highland Games event, and walk past the 1571 brewery and former schoolhouse. The castle courtyard’s arcades appear in the village coat of arms.
