Wallfahrtskirche Maria Freienstein

Maria Freienstein stands on a narrow rock ledge high above Sankt Peter-Freienstein in the Vordernberg valley. The site once held the late-medieval Burg Leoben, built by the local lords as both refuge and court house. After the fortress fell into disrepair the Jesuits bought it in 1652 and turned its ruins into a church dedicated to the Seven Sorrows of Mary. The present building, finished in 1663, crowns the old walls and keeps the memory of the land’s judicial past. The church matters because it preserves the only surviving parts of the former Burg Leoben: a massive round tower and the gatehouse called Priesterstöckl. Inside, the altars and pulpit follow the black-and-gold Jesuit style, a rare example of that decoration in the region. The building also witnessed the life of Gustav Hackl, a local doctor and writer who used rooms above the gate as his writing retreat in the 1930s and 1940s. Today it remains a pilgrimage church, especially on Marian feast days. Visitors cross a small bridge to reach the walled forecourt on two rock terraces. The gatehouse still shows its old arrow slits, and the round tower rises beside the single-nave church. Inside, the Jesuitenstil altars gleam against dark wood, while the roof rests on four bays of vaulting. The whole hilltop keeps the feel of a fortified place, with the valley and surrounding peaks visible from the churchyard.
