Bundesrealgymnasium (ehem. Kloster)

The former monastery building now houses the Bundesrealgymnasium Steyr on Michaelerplatz. Built in the 19th century, it stands in the heart of Steyr, a town where the rivers Enns and Steyr meet. The school traces its origins to a three-class lower real school founded in 1863, which became an upper real school before sending its first graduates in 1875. The school’s history shows steady growth and change. In 1924 it became a Realgymnasium with Latin, and in 1962 it adopted the name BG/BRG Steyr. After the gymnasium branch moved to Werndlpark in 1973, the Michaelerplatz site returned to a pure Realgymnasium. Since 1984 French has been taught in the upper level, with a parents’ association formed in 1947 and an alumni association in 2008. Visitors to the Michaelerplatz building find a classical schoolhouse with wide corridors and tall windows. The façade still shows its monastic past, while classrooms reflect modern teaching. The town around it offers quiet squares and riverside walks, linking the school to Steyr’s old merchant quarter.
