Eastbourne railway station
Eastbourne railway station stands in the seaside town of Eastbourne, East Sussex, on the East Coastway Line. It is one of two stations in the town, alongside Hampden Park Station, with two more in nearby Westham and Polegate. Trains reverse here to continue east to Bexhill, Hastings and Ashford International, or west via Lewes to Brighton or London Victoria. The station manages this junction north of Hampden Park, where lines split in both directions. The present building opened in 1886, designed by F.D. Brick, replacing earlier timber and relocated structures. It once had four platforms, two run-around loops, and a vaulted canopy with a lantern roof similar to Lewes station. A goods yard to the north became the Enterprise Shopping Centre, and the former coal depot site now hosts a car dealership. The station’s signal box, built in 1882, once controlled 108 levers before being modernised and closed in 2015. Visitors find a ticket office, automatic barriers, shops including Subway and WHSmith, a coffee shop, barber, florist, and sheltered seating around the station. There is a car park, taxi rank, bus stop, toilets, cash machines, and a passenger lounge. The station’s Grade II listing reflects its Victorian architecture, while its facilities serve both locals and visitors arriving for Eastbourne’s seafront and town centre.
