Schloss Falkenberg

Schloss Falkenberg stands on the edge of Falkenberg village in northern Hesse, below the Schlossberg hill. It occupies the middle of a large former knightly estate, surrounded by farm buildings that now serve as stables or homes. The main building is an irregular two-storey timber-framed structure on a solid stone base, topped by a low hipped roof and a tall stone tower.
The castle is worth the journey for its layered history and surviving features. The oldest parts date from 1513–16, but the present shape comes from expansions in 1560–1778. Landgraves, generals and noble families left their mark, including Moritz of Hesse-Kassel and the Henschel industrialists. The seven-storey tower still offers a view over the park and fields, while the Baroque garden sculptures recall the mid-18th century.
Inside the main block are large rooms with wooden-beamed ceilings and ornate chimneys from the 16th and 17th centuries. The west side opens to a park with a pond and fountain, framed by a square stair-tower. An open wooden gallery projects from the south front, supported on pillars. The courtyard is enclosed by stables and barns that once formed the castle’s defences, parts of which survive in the masonry.
