Burgruine Pittersberg

The Burgruine Pittersberg is a ruined hilltop castle on a lone rock outcrop on the Gailberg saddle’s southern side, just northwest of Laas in the Kötschach-Mauthen parish. It first appears in records in 1252 when it belonged to the Counts of Görz, later passing to the Habsburgs under the Peace of Pusarnitz. By the mid-17th century it had already fallen into ruin, yet fragments remain: the stub of what may be a 12th-century keep, stretches of curtain wall, and a round cistern. Visitors find the remains scattered across the rocky summit, with clear views over the Gail valley. The surviving masonry shows the outline of the old bailey and the cistern’s rim. The site is quiet, reached by a short path that climbs from the saddle, offering a quiet place to stand among the stones and imagine the castle’s past.
