Breitentalskopf

The Breitentalskopf is a hill in the Harz Mountains of central Germany. It stands south-east of Sieber in the district of Göttingen in Lower Saxony. The hill reaches 579.1 metres above sea level. It divides the River Sieber from the Breitental valley. The valley’s stream, the Tiefenbeek, gave the hill its name. To the south-east the Aschentalshalbe ridge continues the line of the hill. The hill is worth the journey for its clear views over the Harz uplands. Walkers often climb it to see the surrounding ridges and valleys. The contrast between the steep slopes and the gentler valleys is striking. The hill’s height and position make it a useful landmark for hikers. It also marks the boundary between two valleys. A visitor finds a broad path leading to the summit. The summit itself is open and grassy. From there the valley of the Sieber stretches north-west. To the south-east the Breitental valley and its stream are visible. The ridge of the Aschentalshalbe runs along the horizon. The hill offers quiet and space in a busy upland landscape.
