Velmerstot

The Velmerstot is the northernmost and highest hill in the Eggegebirge ridge in North Rhine-Westphalia. It has two summits: the Prussian Velmerstot at 468 metres and the Lippe Velmerstot at 441 metres. The hill lies within the Teutoburg Forest / Egge Hills Nature Park. During the Cold War it hosted NATO and Dutch air defence installations. These were removed by 1994 and the remaining structures demolished between 2002 and 2003. The site is worth visiting for its sweeping views across the surrounding countryside. The Prussian summit offers wide panoramas over the Weser plain while the Lippe summit looks toward the Teutoburg Forest. The area’s military past adds a layer of historical interest. The nature park protects rare plants and animals on its slopes. Walkers can explore quiet trails that lead to both peaks. A visitor finds open heathland and mixed woodland on the lower slopes. The summits are marked by simple stone cairns and information boards. The contrast between the peaceful landscape and the former military presence is striking. Paths wind through the nature reserve, linking viewpoints and sheltered clearings. The air is fresh and the views stretch for many kilometres on clear days.
