St Garmon's Church

St Garmon’s Church stands in the quiet village of Llanfechain in Powys, Wales. It is an active Anglican parish church with a long history tied to a 9th-century Celtic saint. The building itself dates mainly from the 13th century, though its roof and furnishings reflect later centuries. The church is built of shale with sandstone details and topped by a red-tiled roof. A small bell turret with a spire rises near the west end, and a circular churchyard surrounds the building. The church is worth visiting for its layered past and well-preserved features. Its fabric appears around 1254, and later restorations in the 19th century introduced a new vestry, exposed roof timbers and benches. The 1890 oak reredos and a 1636 pulpit add character inside. Outside, a Grade II-listed sundial and the preaching mound of St Garmon mark the site’s spiritual history. Inside, the single-chamber nave and chancel open up under a barrel ceiling. The west gallery overlooks the space, and the font shows signs of Civil War damage. A ring of three bells from the 1730s hangs in the belfry. Beyond the lych gate lies a holy well linked to the saint, completing the church’s historic setting.
