Beinn Mhòr

Beinn Mhòr stands on the Cowal Peninsula in Argyll and Bute, west of Loch Eck. It is the highest mountain on the peninsula and offers wide views because of its height and shape. The mountain lies inside the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. To the east, Benmore Botanic Garden uses the lower slopes and includes an outdoor centre in Benmore House. The most common way up is from the south, starting at the end of the public road into Glen Massan. Walkers follow a short path to the glen, then climb about 400 metres on forestry tracks and paths. After that, the route leaves the trees and crosses gentle grassy slopes to the summit. There are no paths above the forest, so walkers must remember where they left the trees to avoid getting lost in steep, thick woodland. The upper slopes are mostly short grass, making the final climb straightforward. A longer route begins at the car park of Benmore Botanic Garden. It follows a track up steep grassy slopes to the secondary tops of Creachan Beag and Creachan Mòr. From there, a wide shoulder leads to the summit of Beinn Mhòr. The garden’s lower slopes provide a green start before the climb begins.
