Stralsund Theatre

The Stralsund Theatre stands in the old Hanseatic town of Stralsund on the Baltic coast. Its history reaches back to the 16th century, when plays were performed on the Alter Markt in 1553 and 1584. The present building was designed by Carl Moritz and opened in 1914. Since 1994 it has formed part of the Theatre of West Pomerania, created by the merger of Stralsund and Greifswald theatres. The theatre is worth the journey because it carries a continuous tradition of public performance for more than four centuries. The merger in 1994 created a single company that still stages drama, opera and ballet today. Its programme draws on the cultural life of the region and reaches audiences across Vorpommern-Rügen. Inside, visitors find a classical auditorium with ornate decoration and modern technical equipment. The theatre presents plays, operas and ballets throughout the year. Outside, the building overlooks the Alter Markt, where the first performances took place centuries ago.
