Sgwd Henrhyd

Sgwd Henrhyd is the tallest waterfall in southern Wales, standing 27 metres high on National Trust land in the Brecon Beacons National Park. It appears in Christopher Nolan’s *The Dark Knight* trilogy as the entrance to the Batcave. The falls tumble over hard sandstone called the Farewell Rock, part of the South Wales Coal Measures. Beneath this lies softer Subcrenatum Sandstone, shaped by the Henrhyd Fault into the steep drop. The Nant Llech stream feeds the waterfall, cutting through layers of rock formed in the Marros Group. Nearby Coelbren village marks the nearest settlement, while the wider area forms part of Wales’ celebrated Waterfall Country. The site draws visitors for its dramatic geology and cinematic fame. In 1833, geologist Sir William Edmond Logan surveyed the area and later found fossil trees a mile down the valley. These ancient trees now stand in Swansea Museum’s garden as part of its ‘History of Swansea in 20 Objects.’ The falls sit where the Henrhyd Fault created the drop, exposing layers of rock from different geological periods. Logan’s work helped map the region’s complex strata, linking the falls to broader geological history. The valley’s steep paths and rugged terrain add to the sense of discovery. A steep path from the National Trust car park leads down to the falls, offering views of the 27-metre drop. Another route starts from Dol Henrhyd near Coelbren village, crossing the opposite side of the valley. The waterfall’s roar fills the narrow gorge, framed by hard sandstone cliffs and softer rock layers below. Visitors often pause at the base to feel the spray and hear the water’s force against the stone. The surrounding woodland and rugged landscape belong to the Brecon Beacons’ upland scenery. The site remains a quiet but striking example of Wales’ natural and cinematic heritage.
