Lilienfeld servant tower

The Dienerturm stands in Lilienfeld, a town in the Traisen valley of Lower Austria. It is a late-Gothic gate tower built on a square plan, its shingle-covered pyramid roof rising above three storeys. The tower once guarded the bridge over the Traisen that linked the suburb Dörfl with the town centre. The building has served as the Lilienfeld district museum since 1960, housing the Mathias-Zdarsky ski museum and the town archives. The ground floor still shows the vaulted passage that once carried the old Dörfl road through the tower. Upstairs, the irregular windows include iron grilles from former cells used for short-term detention. Visitors find late-Gothic arched gateways, a massive buttressed wall, and the simple three-storey extension added in the 19th century. The museum displays local history alongside ski equipment from Mathias Zdarsky, an early Alpine skiing pioneer. The tower’s quiet square courtyard offers a view of the surrounding mountains.
