Burgruine Mödling

Burg Mödling stands above the Mödling valley in the Föhrenberge nature park, about a kilometre beyond the drop-off of the hills at the edge of the Vienna basin. The rocky section below, where the Mödling stream flows, is called the Klausen. From the castle site observers could watch for danger coming from the east, using outposts that reached towards the Wienerwald. The ruins look east over the town of Mödling and west towards the Husarentempel. The hill itself has also been known as Teuferstein or Teufelstein in older maps and tales.
The castle first appears in records from 1002, though it may have been a fortification around today’s St Othmarkirche. By 1177 it was the seat of a Babenberg cadet line, built at least partly for Theodora, a niece of the Byzantine emperor Manuel I. Its most famous guest is said to be the Minnesänger Walther von der Vogelweide in 1219, though this rests on a single line in his poem thanking Leopold VI in Vienna. Neidhardt von Reuental actually stayed and mentions Mödling in his winter song after losing his Bavarian fief. The Habsburgs later appointed castellans, but the castle suffered repeated fires, notably in 1529 during the First Turkish Siege of Vienna and finally in 1556 when lightning struck. After 1683 it was used as a quarry and later rebuilt in an ahistorical style before being returned to the town in 1848.
Visitors today follow a circular path through the cleared romanesque remains, with information panels explaining each section. The site offers wide views over the valley and towards the town and the Husarentempel. The ruins lie within the Föhrenberge nature park, a popular area for walkers. Nearby on the Phönixberg once stood the Pfennigburg, a supposed Babenberg outpost now marked by a later artificial ruin. The castle’s long history and the care taken to preserve its ruins make it a rewarding destination for anyone exploring the eastern edge of the Wienerwald.
