Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum

Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum stands inside the All England Lawn Tennis Club in the London Borough of Merton. It opened in 1977 to mark the centenary of The Championships and was reopened in 2006 by The Duke of Kent. The museum is the largest tennis museum in the world and holds exhibits and artefacts dating back to 1555. Visitors can interact with touch-screen consoles and see memorabilia from famous players from Victorian times to the present day. Seasonal exhibits keep the displays fresh throughout the year. The museum offers several special experiences. A virtual reality journey takes visitors through the history of The Championships, the science of its grass courts, and 360-degree footage from 2016. Another tour, led by a projection of John McEnroe, guides visitors through areas usually off-limits. A collection called The Whites of Wimbledon shows past and present fashion in tennis attire. Guided tours by Blue Badge guides and audio guides are also available. The Kenneth Ritchie Wimbledon Library sits within the museum and holds the world’s largest tennis library. It contains books, periodicals, videos, and DVDs about tennis. The museum remains open year-round except during The Championships week, when only ticket holders may enter. Behind the scenes, visitors see the club’s inner workings and the atmosphere of Centre Court when it is not in use.
