Maritimmuseum

The Maritim Museum Norddeich stood in Norddeich, a district of Norden in Lower Saxony. Klaas Evers opened it in 1967 to display his collection of handcrafted ship models and glass-bottle ships. The permanent exhibition also featured old and modern nautical instruments and paintings of the North Sea coast. Financial difficulties led to its closure in 2010. After closing, the exhibits were sold off. The museum was a modest yet focused tribute to seafaring life along the North Sea. Its displays showed how local people once navigated the shallow waters and shifting sands. Visitors could see tools used for fishing and chart-making in earlier centuries. The glass-bottle ships were delicate reminders of sailors’ patience and skill. Though small, the collection gave a clear picture of maritime traditions in the region. Today the building no longer houses a museum. The empty rooms once held cases of brass sextants and wooden binnacles. Light from tall windows fell on maps pinned to the walls. The air carried the faint scent of varnish from the restored models. Now only memories remain of the quiet displays and the stories they told.
