Kapuzinerkirche und -kloster

The Kapuzinerkirche stands in the town of Imst in the Austrian Alps. It belongs to a former Capuchin monastery founded in 1673 after approval by Emperor Leopold I. The church is dedicated to Saint Joseph and protected as a historic monument. The church is worth visiting for its fine interior. The high altar from the 19th century shows work by the lay brother Günther Krahbichler. Six large paintings from the early 1700s depict scenes from the Passion of Christ. A life-size crucifix carved in 1823 by Peter Paul Holzknecht completes the furnishings. Inside, the church has a simple barrel-vaulted nave and a wooden west gallery added in the 19th century. The north side holds a barrel-vaulted chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Outside, a small baroque hermitage from 1763 stands in the monastery garden, its walls decorated with shells and stones.
