Pfarrkirche Bisamberg

The parish church of Bisamberg stands on a rise above the village of Bisamberg in Lower Austria. It is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and is surrounded by a cemetery. The church is protected as a listed building and overlooks the surrounding countryside from its elevated position.
The church dates back to a 13th-century structure built by the community and local lords. Its oldest part is a small Romanesque nave from before 1203, later enlarged with a Gothic choir in the 15th or 16th century. The Baroque west front and onion dome tower were added in the 18th century, replacing an earlier Gothic tower. Inside, the nave has barrel vaults while the choir features a ribbed net vault. The church contains altars, a pulpit, and a late-19th-century organ by Franz Ullmann.
Visitors enter through a deep porch beneath the tower with its tall, narrowing onion dome. The nave’s plain walls hold round-arched windows, while the Gothic choir has stepped buttresses and tracery windows. Side chapels and a sacristy extend the building, and outside stands a 17th-century Calvary with eleven sandstone groups. Inside, the high altar shows the Holy Family, and side altars display paintings from the early 19th century. The churchyard holds historic gravestones, adding to the site’s layered history.
